  • Elected to the KWF International Shihankai (Master Panel) in 2007
  • Awarded 6th degree black belt in 2004 by Yahara Sensei and the international grading panel of KWF at age 29, making Shane the youngest 6th dan in a mainline JKA-style Shotokan organisation in the world, including the Japanese

  • Member of the official National Squad from 1993 to 2002, where Shane was the number one male choice for South Africa in both Kata and Kumite

  • Honbu dojo of the JKA in Japan, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1992, 1995. Instruction was given by the following Sensei: Tanaka, Osaka, Isaka, Yahara, Kagawa, Abe, Ueki. Trained with Nakayama Sensei 1983, 1985, 1986
  • Honbu Dojo of KWF in Japan 2004 and 2006 with Yahara and Isaka sensei
  • San Diego with Nishiyama Sensei and Shirai Sensei 1987
  • Crystal Palace with Enoeda Sensei 1988
  • Milan with Shirai Sensei 1989
  • Tokyo with Yahara Sensei, Abe Sensei, Isaka Sensei regularly 1992 –2001
  • Appointed as official instructor for the KWF World Camp Miami, USA, 2002


  • After graduating cum laude from Wits medical school in 1998, Shane completed his internship and community service at Johannesburg General Hospital in 1999 and 2000 respectively
  • He then worked in the United Kingdom as the resident medical officer at BUPA hospital in Leeds, covering medical emergencies in both general as well as ICU wards
  • Upon returning to South Africa in 2002, Shane did casualty and GP locums and acted as assistant surgeon to a number of well-known general and orthopaedic surgeons
  • In 2003 Shane started his MBA at Wits medical school, qualifying cum laude in mid 2004, where he also received a distinction for his research report entitled ‘Public Private Partnerships in the Healthcare Sector’
  • Following this, Shane was appointed as Chief Operating Officer of Linkwood Clinic, an independent clinic focused on IVF, Maternity and Ophthalmology disciplines. During his first year, revenues at Linkwood clinic improved over 100%
  • In 2006, Shane was offered positions both at McKinsey and Company (as a management consultant) and on RMB’s elite ‘Class of’ program but decided to join Netcare, first as a senior management consultant and then as part of the focused Health Policy Unit where he was the lead strategist on a number of projects including Care Pathways and managed care initiatives, stem cell policy and research (for Netcare’s subsidiary Netcells) and PPI initiatives pertaining to specific core service delivery projects. Shane was also involved in other projects specifically relating to Alternative Re-imbursement Models (ARM’s)
  • Shane was then appointed Managing Director and was made a shareholder of Regiment’s Health & Wellness (Pty) Ltd (a subsidiary of Regiments Capital) which is a black-owned company focusing on investment banking as well as projects in the healthcare space
  • Shane has also acted as an independent consultant on a number of broad healthcare projects where clients have included Novartis, the Johannesburg Development Agency, Healthbridge and HealthInsite
