Pilates classes are offered at our Fitness Centre on Tuesdays & Thursdays, at 8.15 am. Two classes run concurrently on these days: Beginners/Intermediate and Intermediate/Advanced.
Pilates - what is it?
Pilates is a mind, body, spirit form of exercise. It increases longer, leaner and stronger muscles. Through correct breathing and correct alignment of the body, Pilates is able to improve posture and flexibility.
History of Pilates
The founder of Pilates was Joseph Pilates, born in 1880 in Germany. He was a very sickly child, but determined to overcome his various afflictions, he studied yoga, Zen meditation and the rigorous exercise regimens of ancient Greeks and Romans. By the age of 14, he gained enough strength to become an accomplished skier, boxer and gymnast.
During the first World War, he taught fellow prisoners series of exercises combining physical fitness with breath control and mental acuity to increase strength and flexibility. This group were distinguished, in that they were all part of the few to survive the traumas of these Prinsoner of War camps.
He immigrated to U.S.A. where he established the Pilates Studio in New York City. Today, followers include dancers, athletes, physiotherapists, fitness trainers, health care professionals and those interested in optimal health and fitness.
He died in 1967. It is said that Mr Pilates believed "we are as old as our spines are flexible".
